Basalt Shards (the ground beneath our feet)
Basalt Shards is an ongoing study in series in part inspired by recent worldwide geological events, and a homage to the kinetic nature of the ground beneath our feet.
Once upon a time, eons ago, these fragments of basalt existed in a completely fluid state that flowed across the land from numerous volcanic eruptions in a area now known as the “Ring of Fire”. Shaping and influencing the currently visible landscape, this flow, upon solidification and over vast amounts of geological time has been (and will be) subjected to numerous seemingly invisible forces now revealed through patterns of fracture.
The exposure of a shear wall of basalt in the Pacific Northwest, specifically East Central Oregon, (a region where scientific expectations are building that a large geological event will occur in the relatively near future) reveals a natural beauty shaped by forceful and potentially dangerous geological processes. At first glance the shards appear to be benign and static.
Appearances can be deceiving however and the series seeks to suggest a foreshadowing and recognition of the kinetic nature of the ground beneath our feet.
